AFSL (Australian Financial Services Licence)
A licence issued by ASIC under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) that authorises a person or entity to provide financial services in Australia. Virex Wealth Management holds AFSL No. 177602.
AUM (Assets Under Management)
The total market value of investments managed by a financial institution on behalf of its clients. AUM is a common measure of the size and scale of a wealth management firm.
Discretionary Management
An investment management arrangement in which the client delegates full investment decision-making authority to the portfolio manager, who acts within an agreed investment mandate.
Fiduciary Duty
A legal and ethical obligation to act in the best interests of another party. AFSL-licensed financial advisers have a fiduciary duty to act in the best interests of their clients.
HNW / UHNW
High-Net-Worth (HNW) individuals typically have investable assets of $1M–$10M. Ultra-High-Net-Worth (UHNW) individuals typically have investable assets exceeding $10M.
KYC (Know Your Client)
The process of verifying the identity of clients and assessing their suitability for financial services, required under AML/CTF legislation and AFSL obligations.
SMSF (Self-Managed Superannuation Fund)
A private superannuation fund regulated by the ATO, with up to six members who are also the trustees. SMSFs offer greater investment flexibility than retail or industry super funds.
SOA (Statement of Advice)
A document required under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) when a licensed financial adviser provides personal financial advice. The SOA sets out the advice, its basis, and all relevant disclosures.
Strategic Asset Allocation
The long-term target allocation of a portfolio across different asset classes (equities, fixed income, alternatives, cash), designed to achieve the investor's objectives within their risk tolerance.
Testamentary Trust
A trust established through a will that comes into existence upon the death of the will-maker. Testamentary trusts can provide significant tax and asset protection benefits for beneficiaries.
Wholesale Client
Under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth), a wholesale client is a person or entity that meets certain financial thresholds or professional criteria, and is subject to fewer consumer protections than retail clients.
CGT (Capital Gains Tax)
A tax on the profit realised from the sale of a capital asset. In Australia, assets held for more than 12 months by individuals may be eligible for a 50% CGT discount.
